I discovered the art of the 1” button when I came across the Inch x Inch button club in 2014. Each month I received three beautiful buttons designed by different artists, and I started collecting them. When my daughter gave me 1” buttons from my alma mater, Auburn University, I realized that this was something that could be produced inexpensively and in bulk. After Jo Bonner became South’s fourth president, he wanted something small he could hand out to to people he met. I suggested a 1” button, and President Bonner took the button and ran with it. Students collect and trade them, and if a student collects them all, the president promises to buy them a drink. 1 inch is a small canvas, but therein lies the challenge. At this point, I’ve presented a couple hundred designs for consideration, and we’ve produced around 125 to date, with many more sure to come.
